Metropolitan Congregations United

About MCU

Metropolitan Congregations United (MCU) is an interdenominational, multi-racial community organization of religious congregations in the St. Louis Metropolitan Region that are working for a common purpose: to create a better life for all residents.

MCU operates on the belief that all people should have access to a living wage, quality education, good housing, affordable health care, and a safe place to raise children.

One solution to these problems is metropolitan organizing: creating coordinated efforts that help individuals become informed about issues affecting the region and encourage them to take an active role in influencing public policy. To this end, MCU was formed to teach citizens how to:

  • Gain access to decision-makers.
  • Bring greater attention to their needs.
  • Create urgency in the community to revitalize the urban core.
  • Impact the social, political, environmental, and economic decisions that affect their lives.

MCU is committed to acting powerfully in the public arena in order to transform our congregations and our community. We believe that individually and together our congregations have a right and responsibility to act for the common good. We believe that the greatest gift we can give to the community are congregations transformed by faith in action in our care for the community around us. Member congregations put their faith into action by identifying and working on issues on three different levels:  Beginning in their neighborhoods, then expanding efforts to their larger community, culminating into overall issues along with MCU for the metropolitan area.

MCU activates congregation members to work on community concerns in the following ways:

  • We listen to the needs of the community and our congregations.
  • We prepare for action by studying the issues most important to our communities.
  • We act powerfully in the public arena to make our community safer, stronger, and better educated

St. Mark's and MCU

Metropolitan Congregations United(MCU) is our social justice ministry, addressing issues in the community. Working with 30 congregations throughout the St. Louis region, we have addressed such issues as foreclosure prevention, education, and pay day loan reform. Rev. Susan Sneed is our St. Mark's MCU Representative.
